Coasters

If you're ever wandering down Queen Street in Southwold, it’s hard to miss the inviting, laid-back charm of Coasters, tucked away at 12 Queen St, Southwold IP18 6EQ, United Kingdom. This isn’t your average seaside eatery - Coasters manages to strike a rare balance between cozy and classy, traditional and inventive. The place is buzzing at breakfast, packed by lunch, and full of energy at dinner. Locals love it, day-trippers come back again and again, and foodies whisper about it like a well-kept Suffolk secret.

One thing that immediately stands out about Coasters is how it captures the spirit of the British coast - not just with its location, but with its food. Fish and Chips here isn’t just a standard dish; it’s a local institution. The batter is golden, light, and shatteringly crisp, and the haddock is flaky and tender. The Cromer Crab, sourced fresh and served simply, highlights just how good Norfolk seafood can be when you let it shine. And if you're more in the mood for something heartier, the Belly Pork with Haggis Mash and Black Pudding delivers deep, savory satisfaction.

For anyone who enjoys a touch of Mediterranean flair, Coasters also surprises with its Sea Bass served with chorizo sautéed potatoes and pesto - a colorful, flavor-packed dish that sits somewhere between rustic tapas and British comfort food. It's that unexpected variety that keeps people talking about this place.

Now, let’s talk starters. The whitebait - a classic - is a crunchy, salty bite to get you going. Or maybe the Soup of the Day, often a creative seasonal blend, is more your speed. But the standout for many is the calamari, tender with a delicate coating and paired with a zippy dip. Vegetarian? The gnocchi is pillowy soft and often dressed in a fresh herb sauce that feels right out of an Italian kitchen.

Coasters isn't just about the mains. The desserts have a loyal following - especially the Sticky Ginger Pudding and the Peanut Butter Cheesecake. Rich, decadent, and clearly made in-house, they round off a meal perfectly. The Apple and Raspberry Crumble, meanwhile, feels like a nostalgic hug - tart, sweet, and topped with just the right amount of crunch.

Morning visitors will be glad to know that Coasters is also a hot spot for a proper English Breakfast, complete with all the trimmings. Paired with a frothy cappuccino or a pot of the great tea selection they’re known for, it’s a fine way to start the day whether you're solo dining or with company. In fact, solo diners seem to really enjoy this spot - something about the relaxed vibe and the attentive, never-pushy service just works for an easygoing meal on your own.

If you’re popping by for a drink, the gin and tonic offerings are delightfully refreshing, especially enjoyed out on the outdoor seating area when the Southwold weather plays nice. The beer list here is surprisingly strong too - local ales, familiar lagers, and a few gems that show someone behind the bar really knows their craft. And if cocktails are more your thing, you’ll find a menu that delivers, whether you’re craving something bright and citrusy or smooth and spiced.

It’s also worth noting how much thought has gone into making the space comfortable for all. Wheelchair-accessible seating is available, making it a welcoming spot for diners with mobility needs, even though parking isn’t quite as accessible.

One thing guests appreciate is the balance of healthy options alongside the indulgent. From fresh salads like the tomato, kalamata olive, and samphire combo, to simple yet vibrant dishes like the smoked salmon sandwich with lemon and dill mayo, you’re never short on lighter bites.

Coasters doesn’t overpromise. It just delivers - great food, generous drinks, friendly staff, and a vibe that suits breakfast, lunch, or dinner. Whether you're craving something classic like a Sunday Roast Leg of Lamb or feel like experimenting with their ever-changing specials, this spot always has something worth returning for.

What an absolute gem of a place. Would highly recommend. Extremely friendly service and the food was delicious. We went here with our pooch and reserved a table...well actually a beach hut!! The beach huts come with heating (you can control), blankets (for humans not your dogs) but we didn't actually use as was warm enough. Bluetooth speaker for music which was very atmospheric. Dogs aloud on the seats too (just not the tables or the blankets).

Booked a hut, I really recommend pre booking as this place can get very busy. It was a lovely, private experience being in the hut, there is even a radio! The food is really nice, I recommend the lamb roast and the tomato soup, and the staff are super friendly. I recommend this restaurant to most, apart from if you are vegetarian, as there is a lack of options for vegetarians, however I will definitely be back.
